As SUVs become increasingly popular, it can be difficult for brands to make models that stand out. However, the Kia Sportage has never had a problem distinguishing itself from the competition. Since its creation in 1993, the Sportage has continued to be one of Kia’s most popular vehicles.
The very first Kia Sportage was developed with a Mazda Bongo-based platform. At the time, Kia had a partnership with both Ford and Mazda. Although it had been around in South Korea for several years, the Sportage didn’t officially arrive in North America until 1998. Early iterations of the Sportage were offered as either a five-door SUV or a three-door convertible. Over time, the five-door SUV became the dominant configuration for the Sportage.
When the second generation of the Kia Sportage arrived in 2004, it utilized an Elantra-based platform. This second-generation Sportage was a much bigger hit than the initial model, thanks to Kia adding an assortment of driver-focused features to the SUV.
Just six short years later, the third-generation arrived to markets around the world. This Sportage greatly improved its safety ratings, and even earned a “Top Safety Pick” title from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The current generation of the Kia Sportage arrived in 2015, maintaining the same safety ratings and features that made the second and third generations such a success.
